Works are nearing completion on a €24 million upgrade of the Carrickmacross wastewater treatment plant, according to Uisce Éireann.
Northern Sound reports that the utility pointed to local upgrades as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published its Urban Wastewater Treatment in 2025 report. In Cavan, upgrades in Virginia (€33 million) and Ballyjamesduff (€25 million) are on track for completion in early 2027.
What the EPA found
The EPA report says 177 of the 190 large urban areas it assesses (93%) complied with EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive standards in 2025. Thirteen did not, down from 14 in 2024. Those 13 areas account for almost half (48%) of the wastewater collected in large urban areas, most of it treated at Ringsend in Dublin.
The report also found that 55% of the 505 licensed sites active in 2025 discharged wastewater that did not meet their licence standards, down from 59% in 2024.
