A woman in her 70s has died following a two-car collision on the N2 at Broomfield on Thursday morning, 22 October. Gardaí said the crash happened at about 10.10am on the busy national route, which links Castleblayney with Carrickmacross and the M1 towards Dublin.

The woman was a passenger in one of the two cars. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and her body was later taken to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where a postmortem examination will take place. The Anglo-Celt reported that the county coroner has been notified.

Two others seriously hurt

Two other people were injured. The driver of the car the woman was travelling in, a woman in her 30s who was its only other occupant, was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. So was the driver and sole occupant of the second car, a man in his 50s. Gardaí described both as having serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The names of those involved have not been released, and no details have yet been given about how the collision happened. A Garda spokesperson told the Anglo-Celt that the investigation is "ongoing".

Road closed for examination

Northern Sound first reported the N2 at Broomfield closed shortly after the crash, with emergency services at the scene and diversions being set up. Motorists were asked to avoid the area. Later in the day the road remained closed so that Garda Forensic Collision Investigators could carry out a technical examination, with diversions still in place.

Anyone planning to travel between Castleblayney and Carrickmacross, or heading south towards Ardee and the M1, should allow extra time and follow the local diversion signs until the road is reopened. The Garda traffic account and local radio usually confirm when a route like this is back open.

Garda appeal for witnesses and footage

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who saw the collision to come forward. They are especially keen to hear from road users who were on the N2 at Broomfield between 10am and 10.30am on Thursday and who may have camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, and they are asking that this footage be made available to them.

Anyone with information can contact:

Even a few seconds of dash-cam footage from just before or after 10.10am can help investigators piece together what happened, so anyone who was driving through Broomfield in that half hour is asked to check their recordings before they are written over.

Another loss on Monaghan's roads

The death comes only days after a serious crash on the N54 at Leggykelly near Clones, where the air ambulance was called (our report). The N2 carries heavy traffic through east Monaghan every day, including lorries, commuters and school runs, and with Storm Austen and Storm Boelo expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds over the coming days (our weather report), Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority will again be urging drivers to slow down and take extra care.

Monaghan Brief extends its sympathy to the family and friends of the woman who died, and wishes the two injured drivers a full recovery.
