Parents in Monaghan are invited to a free evening on keeping children safe online. "Safe Digital Spaces – What Parents Need to Know" takes place on Thursday, 12 November 2026, from 7pm to 9pm at the Four Seasons Hotel, Monaghan. It is open to everyone, but registration is essential.
The event is run by the Monaghan Women's Assembly with the Monaghan Local Community Safety Partnership (LCSP), Northern Sound reported.
What it covers
Cllr Sinéad Flynn, chair of the Women's Assembly, said the evening will look at online safety, the risks of social media, and how heavy phone use affects young people's mental health. The aim is to give parents practical knowledge to support their children. She said the assembly plans more events over the next 12 months.
A concern raised at the LCSP
Online harm in schools came up at the LCSP's August meeting, the Anglo-Celt reported. Foróige's Colin McAree spoke about presentations on Coco's Law, which covers the sharing of intimate images, and Supt Pat O'Connell said a Garda schools programme is ongoing. Cathal O'Gorman described a presentation by David McCague, principal of St Macartan's College.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Alan Johnston said parents need to be more engaged, and that some children are getting as little as three hours' sleep. Cllr Flynn pointed to Australia's ban on social media for under-16s.
