Monaghan man Martin Maguire and his sons Daithí and Caolán will take part in the Dickie Dip in the Irish Sea on Saturday, 7 November 2026, to raise money for the Mater Foundation, Northern Sound reports. Fundraising starts with a charity cocktail night on Saturday, 31 October, at The Saddle Bar at Wild Thyme Restaurant, Threemilehouse.
Why they're doing it
Martin has been diagnosed with cancer three times and has been involved with the cancer support group Crocus for several years. Caolán told Northern Sound that the challenge is also about getting people to have health checks. He noted that his father's last cancer diagnosis came without any clear symptoms of ill health.
About the Dickie Dip
According to the Mater Foundation:
The Dickie Dip is an all-male fundraiser in Skerries. Participants go into the sea wearing only a dickie bow.
Sign-in is from 8.45am to 10.45am on 7 November, with the dip at about 11am.
This is the seventh Dickie Dip. The target is €140,000 for men's cancer care at the Mater Public Hospital.
There's no registration fee, and dippers raise an average of €300.
A match fund will double the first €50,000 raised.
The foundation says the money helps pay for in-house cancer treatments, diagnostic equipment for early detection and post-treatment supports. For more local cancer support news, see Crocus's Care 4 Ur Pair campaign.
