Bragan in north County Monaghan has become a "public dumping point", a local councillor has said, after mattresses were dumped just up the road from Bragan Bog on the night of Saturday 10 October.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Raymond Aughey told Northern Sound the general Bragan area remains a constant dumping site. He believes installing wildlife cameras would be enough to prevent such incidents. "We need to be more proactive," he said.

What the Council has said about cameras

In a written reply to Cllr Bronagh McAree (SF) in April, reported by the Anglo-Celt, Monaghan County Council said it had examined CCTV at Bragan but that covert CCTV can't be deployed. Any CCTV must be clearly signposted and run in line with data protection law.

"Experience shows that while overt CCTV can deter dumping at a specific point, it often just causes the problem to move to another nearby location," the reply said. The Council said it was instead monitoring known hotspots, investigating reports, taking enforcement action where possible and working with communities to encourage reporting.

Anyone who sees dumping can report it to Monaghan County Council's Environment Section.
