Owners of protected and historic buildings in County Monaghan have until Friday, 30 October 2026 to apply to Monaghan County Council for 2027 conservation grants under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) and its Historic Thatched Buildings (HTB) stream.
Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2027
The BHIS supports repair and conservation of historic buildings and structures, and in doing so the employment of conservation professionals and craftspeople. It is open to owners or occupiers of:
Protected Structures and Proposed Protected Structures;
structures in Architectural Conservation Areas (ACAs);
vernacular structures – up to €50,000 where the building is also a Protected Structure or in an ACA, otherwise a maximum of €30,000.
Grants range from €2,500 to €50,000.
Historic Thatched Buildings stream
The HTB stream covers any historic thatched structure, domestic or commercial, with grants of up to €20,000 covering up to 80% of the total cost of works. Applications are assessed on the significance of the structure and the efficacy and quality of the works, as well as the contribution to public amenity. Applying under HTB does not rule out applying to the Historic Structures Fund or the main BHIS, but only one grant can be drawn down per structure.
How to apply
Completed applications on Form A, with a comprehensive method statement, go to the Administrative Officer, Planning Section, No. 1 Dublin Street, Monaghan Town, H18 X982, or by email to [email protected], on or before 30 October 2026. Circulars, guidance booklets and forms are on the council website, and hard copies are available at the Planning Office reception. The council's events calendar lists a separate Historic Structures Fund deadline of 27 November.
Monaghan sits in the lowest price band for the shared-equity scheme, below the €395,000 average price paid by scheme users nationally, as new figures show most approvals still going to Dublin and the commuter belt.
Council, Gardaí, fire service and the RSA launched the County Monaghan Road Safety Action Plan for 2026–2027 at Monaghan Fire Station, with lower school-area speed limits and targeted enforcement among the priorities.
Monaghan County Council had warned agents that new planning forms and site notices would be needed from 13 October. The Department of Housing has deferred that commencement, so the 2000 Act rules still apply.
