Magheracloone have secured their place in the Greenfield Foods Monaghan Senior Football Championship for 2027 after a comprehensive win over Cremartin Shamrocks in Sunday's relegation final at Aughnamullen.
The Mitchells finished 3-20 to 1-9 winners, according to the Monaghan GAA fixtures and results board and Final Whistle's match record for 11 October. The Anglo-Celt reported the same outcome on Monday: Magheracloone stay senior, and Cremartin drop to Intermediate for next season.
Second-half surge decides it
Magheracloone had much the better of the opening 20 minutes, the Anglo-Celt's Colm Shalvey wrote, before a lengthy stoppage for an unfortunate collision between Magheracloone forward Allan Kieran and Cremartin goalkeeper Oisín Branigan.
After the delay, Cremartin hit 1-3 without reply and led by 1-7 to 0-9 at half-time, helped by a Stephen Mooney two-pointer. Magheracloone regrouped after the break and dominated the second half. Goals from Kian Duffy, Paudie McMahon and Barry Kieran underpinned what the Anglo-Celt called a comprehensive victory.
The final scoreline — Magheracloone 3-20, Cremartin 1-9 — matches the official Monaghan GAA listing for the Senior Championship Relegation Final and Final Whistle's record of the playoff at Aughnamullen.
What it means for both clubs
For Magheracloone, the result ends a nervous autumn at the bottom of the senior grade. They had already beaten Corduff in a relegation semi-final on 27 September (1-18 to 0-11, per Final Whistle) to reach Sunday's decider. Holding senior status keeps them among the county's top clubs for 2027.
For Cremartin, defeat means Intermediate football next year. They had stayed in the hunt deep into the group stages — including a dramatic late win over Magheracloone in Round 3 — but Sunday's relegation final was the only senior drop place left to fill, and they could not turn their half-time lead into survival.
Intermediate picture still not settled
The Anglo-Celt noted that Intermediate relegation is not finished yet. Éire Óg won their first play-off against Tyholland — James Morrow's penalty save helping to stop a late Tyholland charge after the Smithborough side had come from ten points down to within three — but Éire Óg must beat Tyholland again to stay Intermediate. An earlier IFL relegation-final loss means a second meeting is required.
Monaghan GAA's fixtures board lists an Intermediate Football League knockout relegation play-off final between Éire Óg and Tyholland for Saturday, 17 October, at Scotstown (4pm, referee Pat McEnaney).
Attention at the top of the senior grade turns next to Clones on Sunday, 18 October, when Scotstown meet Truagh in the county final at St Tiernach's Park (3:30pm).
